URBAN SOCIOLECTS

Abstract

The urban language situation attracts attention of many linguists nowadays. Using the notion of sociolect, which is understood as socially marked language subsystem, the research of urban speech is very effective. A sociolect is a set of language codes used by individuals who belong to the same social group. There are two types of sociolect models: partial and general ones. Partial models are based on the single factor. The general model is based on several social factors and exactly this model can give an integral description of all the factors’ interaction. The general model emerges at different stages of partial models’ generalization. Construction of the general model requires complex statistic methods. The influence of the factors “age”, “place of birth”, “level of education”, “occupation”, “psychological orientation” in lexis and phonetics was analyzed. The analysis of the statistical model for the units of lexical and phonetic levels shows that there are both general rules and specific features of the factors’ influence on the units of different levels. A significant influence of social factors linked with professional knowledge and skills both at the lexical and phonetic levels can be referred to general features. Specific features of the levels are revealed in the fact that the factor of the territory is remarkable only at the lexical level; segmental phonetic units are insensitive to this factor.
