CURRENT TRENDS IN THE ABUSE OF PSYCHOACTIVE SUBSTANCES BY SLOVAKIAN CHILDREN AND YOUTH
Abstract
The article brings findings on using psychoactive substances by Slovakian children and youth. The aim of this research was to analyze the trends of abuse of psychoactive substances. Research sample consisted of 2 407 pupils aged 12 to 16 years from two big cities in Slovakia. Data were collected by questionnaire ISRD 3 which was developed within the project International Self-Reported Delinquency. Research findings show the preference for the quantity and blending of alcoholic beverages in one go. This is a way to drink 5+ drinks for quick drunkenness. This type of drinking is risky because of an earlier onset of the development of addiction and all the consequences associated with it. The most significant negative consequences of such behaviors, such as changes in the brain and its structures, health and social problems, are recorded in children and young people who start abusing very early. Therefore, the abuse of psychoactive substances by children and young people deserves the great attention. It is necessary to develop preventive and intervention measures as well as drug policies on national level. Research findings can be used to set up early and targeted prevention of this behavior.
