Abstract

International migration is one of the manifestations of globalization processes. International migration has an influence not only on a country of origin but also on a receiving country. In Slovakia, there is not a big number of migrants, about 1% of the whole Slovak population are migrants. We carried out a research on opinions and actual issues connected with migrations among adult population of the Slovak Republic and here we present our results. The fieldwork phase of nationwide representative research was realized over the year 2011 and 2012. Data recording was carried out by self administration. Volunteer respondents filled out our questionnaire forms - some in paper form and som via e-mail. For data evaluation we used the statistical program SPSS. We found out that Slovak population didn't show as big interest on migration issues, the levels of interest varied by different regions of the country. The average ratings near the centre represent the opinions on migrant integration. Respondents think that the Slovak Republic sufficiently assisted migrants during their integration period but only 15% of them know some of the exact activities. The respondents expressed the opinion that migrants can enrich our country mostly by their own culture and professional skills. The respondents do not mind the migrants coming to our country as long as they do not come to their areas. A migrant as the closest collaborator would hinder the smallest proportion of our respondents. The respondents express their opinion that the Slovaks perceive migrants rather negative to negative. We consider that it is necessary to pay attention to this issue in order to avoid ethnic tensions. But we are willing to integrate migrants into our society which demonstrates our maturity.
