Abstract

Various pieces of research have agreed on the fact that Emotional Intelligence (EI) is crucial when it comes to career development and it can also be important in determining personality traits. We assume that the emotional intelligence profile of engineering students is a function of the configuration of a set of complex traits. The objective consists in building an emotional intelligence profile of a group of engineering students by extracting some definition attributes of the latter. To this purpose, we selected students within a pilot study. The latter filled in two questionnaires, one for emotional intelligence and its factorial components measured by Bar-On EQ-I and the latter for the evaluation of the traits of the Five Factors model measured by means of questionnaire ABCD-M (the replication of the model Big Five in the Romanian language). The methodological design used the correlational and exploratory factorial analysis. The results showed relatively high levels of Emotional Intelligence. Gender differences confirmed data regarding the high interpersonal intelligence of the female subjects in comparison with the male ones. The correlational analysis highlights significantly positive correlations between emotional intelligence and extraversion, maturity and conscientiousness. The factorial analysis led to the four factors representing between 27 and 15 % of the total variation in the characterization of the group. The secondary factors extracted in the characterization of the group are: intrapersonal intelligence conditioned by disposition when the subject is an extrovert, emotional control and inter-relational adaptation, self-actualization behavior, cooperating and sympathetic behavior.
