MOTIVATIONAL, COGNITIVE, AND BEHAVIORAL COMPONENTS OF THE MAIN GOAL IN LIFE: A STRUCTURAL MODEL
Abstract
Traditionally, the main goal in life is among concepts representing the highest level of the goals hierarchy and self-regulation. This level is closely associated with a presence of meaning in life. The assessment of goals at the highest level depends on a methodological approach. Quantitative studies reduce the assessment of the main goal to its generalized perception, while qualitative studies present a broad variability in its formulations. The aim of this exploratory study was to integrate these views of the main goal in life within a structural model. The model was developed in line with the model of individual future orientation involving motivational, cognitive, and behavioral components. The model of the main goal in live was tested in a sample of 223 participants aged 18 to 69 (M = 25.28, SD = 8.47 years, 65% females). The main goal in life was assessed by the extended Individual Future Orientation Scale. The motivational component of the main goal in life was presented as perceived value, expectancy of fulfillment, and control over it. The cognitive component was assessed as a binary variable formed through a latent class analysis. The analysis revealed two kinds of formulations of the main goal – Saturated (low uncertainty) and Vague (high uncertainty). The behavioral component included individual commitment to the goal and exploration of goal-related opportunities. The results of structural equation modeling demonstrated significant regression of the behavioral component on the cognitive and motivational components and of cognitive component on the motivational component of the main goal in life. Model fit indices (CFI = 0.99, TLI = 0.99, NFI = 0.95, RMSEA = 0.03, SRMR = 0.03) supported congruence of the model with data. In addition, the model demonstrated invariance regarding participants’ gender.
