FUNCTIONAL URBANIZED AREA OF THE BICENTRIC HRADEC-PARDUBICE RESIDENTIAL AGGLOMERATION
Abstract
This paper focuses on defining functional urban areas in the Czech Republic. Time availability of population centres is a key factor in their economic development. An analysis of regional and local centres and their accessibility in terms of job vacancies leads to the identification of areas with poor accessibility and assessment of the impact of upcoming or already implemented major transportation investments on the availability of the centres. Based on the assumption that the time availability is of great importance for the formation of functional urban regions, or their interconnection to the polycentric settlement systems, in this case it is necessary to focus on the processes of connecting core cities of the bicentric Hradec-Pardubice agglomeration including mutual competitiveness not only of regional centres but also local centres within the agglomeration. In many European countries and at the European level, in specialized and political committees discussion is taking place about urban regions and their involvement in the polycentric settlement systems, e.g. in [1][3][4].
