ON LINE EDUCATION FOR COMPLEX LIFE THREATENING SKELETAL INJURIES

Abstract

The current trend in medicine is focused on the enhancement of basic skills and development of new skills as requested by the labor market. This aspect is crucial for growth and competitiveness of the medical field and in this context vocational education must be able to react to the demand for advanced vocational skills. A growing number of reports draw attention to the need of adjustment of the offer in medical education to labor market needs and the knowledge-based society. In the light of these previous researches and findings, we started from the idea that the scope of medical practice must be expanded beyond the core competencies to incorporate additional skills and procedures that improve care for patients and their families and we proposed to provide information and education for orthopaedic medical doctors by the use of a Learning Management Systems delivered through the Internet, within the framework of e-TRAUMA project. The goal of e-TRAUMA project is to follow up on the experiences from different national initiatives, but extending the orthopaedic training and focusing on a broader progress program based on a comprehensive multi-disciplinary, multi-sectoral and coordinated efforts for management of complex trauma. An innovative methodology for practical skills development was implemented by setting up new forms of practical training schemes and study of real-life cases in orthopaedics, adapted to labour market needs. Practice is essential for a doctor but development of practical skills in multinational environments takes time and costs for mobility. By our solution e-learning doesnВ’t have to substitute the practice but should aim at strongly enhancing the skills and knowledge of medical professionals to be better prepared to practice. The case studies included in our platform present clinical information, Rx, CT, MRN images, surgical videos that will support orthopaedic professionals in training and help in the development of advanced vocational skills. Interactivity will allow trainees to test their knowledge and provides immediate feedback. Integration of good practices and new methods into daily activities at the workplace will get a greater effectiveness of activities for the benefit of local communities (increasing the level of health care/patient satisfaction, decreasing the morbidity/mortality and health costs).
