INFORMATION MANAGEMENT AND INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION ABILITIES OF MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE STUDENTS
Abstract
The article analyses information management and communication abilities of the students of Mathematics and Computer Science (MCS) degree programme. The research objective is to empirically justify the content of studentsВ’ information management and interpersonal communication skills within natural science programmes. The concept of information management abilities is operationalized taking into consideration the theoretical information management skills model SCONUL (Society of College, National and University Libraries' Seven Pillars of Information Literacy). Students' interpersonal communication was assessed according to the interpersonal competence model in cooperation. The survey results show that the most expressed abilities of MCS students are information abilities of strategic and ethical nature: ethical and legal usage of information, information search objective and the abilities of need perception. The weakest expressed abilities include information selection and processing, and skills of information search strategy set up. The exploratory factor analysis for interpersonal communication abilities has revealed that MCS students willingly provide information to a collaborating partner, analyze the existing problems and discuss them with the collaborating partner, reasonably express their views, share information and contacts of colleagues, as well as responsibly prepare for meetings.
