LIVING ON TOP - PROBLEMS OF THE ADAPTATION OF ATTICS IN HISTORICAL BUILDINGS
Abstract
The article discusses problems associated with the adaptation of attics in buildings located in the historical old town complexes of European cities. It is an attempt at illustrating several aspects of the preparation and implementation of a complex development process based upon, among other elements, a multi-criteria decision-making process. In comparison to development projects planned outside of building complexes of historical value, the introduction of a new form of use into existing structures of a historical character and diverse historical values requires a much greater amount of work both during the preparation and carrying out of a project. During the preparation, as well as over the course of the carrying out of a development project, its participants stand before new challenges. They are faced with the necessity of preparing additional analytical and design documentation. The decision-making process that accompanies the preparation of these types of development projects is exceptionally complex. All decisions and resolutions must take into consideration the historical and artistic value of buildings and their elements, in addition to their value in terms of architectural conservation. This is also associated with increasing the cost and extending the completion time of such development projects. The article includes an analysis of built projects featuring the adaptation of attic spaces located in historical buildings complexes of Vienna and Krakow.
