THE EFFECTIVENESS OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN POVERTY REDUCTION - A SURVEY OF THE LITERATURE

Abstract

The role of basic education in reducing and combating poverty has been a topic of interest for many researchers in the field, becoming obvious that there is a strong relationship between basic education and poverty reduction. Incontestably, we could say, if this is true, the relationship between higher education and poverty reduction should be positive and much stronger, all the more so at the theoretical and empirical level we can speak of a consent on the fact that higher education is a key factor for generating new jobs [1]. For years, higher education has been considered as an expensive and inefficient service mainly to the benefit of the rich and privileged [1]. Nowadays it is considered an effective tool for increasing national productivity and competitiveness, for the country's economic growth and development and implicitly for reducing and combating poverty. In order to support the previous statements and by using the methods of systematic and narrative literature review, the state of the art review and by generating a synthesis of the recent researches, we propose in the present study to make an overtime concise incursion of the existing debates on this subject.
