SOCIAL ASPECTS OF QUALITY URBAN LIFE
Abstract
The aim of the paper is to motivate the Government and local authorities to manage and plan the development of urban communities in the next 5 – 10 years through public policies. Globalization, as an external factor accelerated the movement of population towards great cities and developed countries several times. Nowadays, ¾ of European population live in cities. This tells us that these kinds of movements are a result of human instinct in search for a better life. The city offers better living and working conditions in different fields such as trade, business, education, communication, entertainment, etc. However, the question is whether all cities are established in that way so as to provide optimal living and working conditions for everybody. Cities in Macedonia are not capable to provide good living and working conditions for the newcomers. Nowadays the migration in big cities seems to have become a great challenge and an increasing trend. However, the authorities are not administering well this development. If we refer to Urban Ecology Studies, Robert Park and Ernest Burgess (1925) – life in the city is described in terms of some of the forces mentioned in the Darwin's Evolution Theory. This is the race for space between groups and individuals. The city acts as a self-regulating mechanism by dividing people according to their wealth. If we compare the Chicago case from the social practice viewpoint with those in Macedonia, we will conclude that in recent years in Macedonia, there has been an accelerated social stratification. The lower stratum population is constantly increasing. Laeken poverty indicators based on the Survey on Income and Living Conditions (2010) show that the at-risk-of-poverty-rate for unemployed persons is 50.6%, while the at-risk-of-poverty-rate for employed persons is 9.9%.
