THE STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF THE PLACE OF THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION IN THE GLOBAL SUGAR MARKET IN THE CONTEXT OF IMPORT REPLACEMENT

Abstract

In the recent years Russian sugar market has been undergoing considerable changes stipulated by the innovation development and national policy of the country focusing on food supply security and support of the domestic beet sugar production. The Russian sugar market has turned into export-dependent from import-dependent and deficit. The article analyses the place of the Russian Federation in the world sugar market in the context of import substitution and shows the Russian Federation as one of the biggest world sugar producers in terms of cane and beet sugar followed by the data of the market share of Russia as a beet sugar producer. The article considers key points influencing competitiveness and penetrates into the geographic structure and export dynamics of sugar in the period of 2016-2017. This research gives a deep insight of the factors significant for pace, volume and destination of sugar export as well as of development perspective and potential risks in 2018-2019. A set of recommendations for further development of the Russian sugar market has been proposed. The paper is based on the statistics research approach including a balancing method, a graphical analysis, an expert assessment and a method of average and relative indicators.
