THE COMPARISON OF SELECTED METHODS USED FOR IDENTIFICATION OF CLUSTER POTENTIAL IN THE REGIONS OF THE SLOVAK REPUBLIC

Abstract

On the performance and competitiveness of national economy influenced the regions through the economic subjects that are operating within them. In recent years, the part of the regional development in the Slovak republic have become except small and medium sized enterprises, business incubators, industrial parks the clusters. Clusters represent a fundamental organizing framework for understanding the local economy in regions and for developing economic performance and competitiveness. According Porter пЃ›1пЃќ clusters are geographic concentrations of interconnected companies and institutions in a particular field. Clusters support: economic growth, the increasing of competitiveness and performance of businesses, the developing of innovation, the creation of new businesses, attracting foreign investment, increasing exports and the employment. The grouping of economic subjects into clusters in regions can have a positive influence on the regional development and on the growth of competitiveness of the region. The topic of industrial clusters in the Slovak Republic in recent year has become the forefront of the professional and the expert public, government and local government. There were established more than 20 clusters which is in comparison with some EU countries very little. The formation process of a cluster has to start with identification of the economic branches that prevailing in the region. These industries form the basis for the following cluster creation and development. For identification of economic industries suitable for cluster creation in regions are used the quantitative and qualitative methods. Their application mostly depends on available data basis. The main aim of the paper is to evaluate the possibility for using of selected quantitative methods in the conditions of the Slovak republic. The paper deals with identification of economic industries for cluster creation in TrenДЌin region using Shift- share analysis, Localization coefficient and Gini index. The next contribution of the paper is the evaluation of this method applicability in the conditions of Slovak republic for creation and development of clusters.
