EXCAVATIONS AT LIONВ’S CAVE ON HYMETTUS MOUNTAIN

Abstract

This work will describe, summarize and present the up to day results of the excavation from a cave site, LionВ’s cave on Hymettus Mountain in Attica. The excavations are a joint project of the University of Athens and the Eforate of Speleology and Paleoanthropology. It is is an interdisciplinary research project organized and directed by the author of this article and a number of specialists in archaeological and palaeoenvironmental disciplines are participating. A considerable number of students from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, as well as from other universities (United States, Europe and Japan) have been trained in excavating and sampling methods and introduced to the new archaeological methodology. The cave's unique geographical position in this area of Attica and its paleontological and archaeological richness attracted many "visitors" during the last centuries. The cave is known from previous surveys of Greek and foreign researchers. Finds of the Neolithic period and from Classical through Roman times have been reported. The purpose of the present investigation is to describe and interpret a prehistoric and Historic habitation pattern in Attica, trying to define a safe chronological and methodological framework, based on cave use and symbolic meaning.
