DESIGNING A COURSE IN SYSTEM MODELING FOR "SYSTEM ANALYSIS AND MANAGEMENT" AND "INFORMATION SYSTEMS" MAJORS
Abstract
Modeling of various systems is a primary task in numerous areas of science, technology and economy. There are a large number of models’definitions and classifications. The reason for this is intensive penetration of modeling into completely different areas: medicine, sociology, economics, technology, military industry, architecture, chemistry, and power engineering etc. (full-systemsimulation). In this case, the key goal is to construct a mathematical model of the system or object under study, that is, to represent (show) the system as a collection of mathematical objects (variables, parameters, equations, inequations). Modeling is directed not only at the explicit practical goals (to study a system in order to reveal its certain operating modes), but also at the objectives of a pedagogical nature: synthesizing and transferring knowledge in a universallyconvenient mathematicalform, understanding the practical value of mathematical theories and methods, applying mathematical methods in practice, and acquiringcertain mathematical knowledge and skills. All this makes system modeling one of the central disciplines in mastering the methods of system analysis, control, and mathematical physics. The purpose of this course is to summarize information about the methods of system modeling in application to various systems. The course contains basic concepts, examples and key models used in different spheres (power engineering, mechanics, economics, information systems, sociology). It considers mathematical methods of system modeling based on various fundamental branches of mathematics. The course also contains structural modeling methods for systems based on the graphtheory and set theory, as well as methods for describing a system using algebraic and differential equations, basic algebraic structures, and a concept of system state variables, phase space and dynamic systems behaviour. “System Simulation” coursebook for "System Analysis and Management" and "Information Systems" majorshas been created toenable better comprehension of the theoretical material and to facilitate hands-on skills by means of a number of proprietory simulators.
