THE EFFECTS OF PARENTS' EMIGRATION ON THE SCHOOL ACTIVITY OF ROMA PUPILS. CASE STUDY: SUCEAVA
Abstract
The deepening of the economic crisis, the alarming increase in unemployment and the continuous degradation of the living standard have affected the Romanian society in general, but especially the vulnerable categories of population, among which the Roma ethnic group. In spite of the restrictions regarding the access on the labour market in the E.U., the Roma families have initiated real survival strategies, and the emigration to the developed countries of the European Union represented, in the majority of the cases, a solution to the problems they face. The aim of this article is school abandonment of Roma pupils whose parents have emigrated. The pronounced increase in school abandonment among Roma pupils is analyzed in close connection to the lack of parents' authority, the less responsible attitude of the relatives and the disinterest in children education in general. The study is based on the data obtained from secondary schools and high-schools from Suceava County, from the data offered by the town halls of each locality of the county and the National Institute of Statistics Romania. The results of our research highlight an increased level of school abandonment among Roma families where one or both parents emigrated and an extremely reduced tendency to attend high-school. As a general feature, we remark a profound disinterest to school of all Roma pupils, and especially of the boys. Most of them refuse to continue their studies and want to follow their parents abroad, even though they cannot speak a foreign language and don't have the right age and education for a job. School abandonment is a worrying phenomenon, especially that education is the key element in solving the problems of social and economic integration the Roma ethnic group face. As long as there are no concrete and preconcerted measures both in Romania and in the E.U. regarding the educational integration of the Roma pupils, the problems of this ethnic group will continue and amplify, placing it at the periphery of the Romanian and the European Union, marked by poverty and delinquency.
