Abstract

The permanent covering of a floor generally provides a wearing surface on top of a support structure, with shape, appearance and materials chosen mainly for architectural, structural and economical reasons. At the same time each flooring choice is unique, and it means and does a lot more than just supporting weight and offering surfaces to walk on. Modern floorings propose strategies and specialized solutions in order to recommend the perfect link between technology and customers. Flooring alternatives, from traditional to high-tech, available due to the great variety of materials and their wide range of applications, have to satisfy numerous requirements related to aesthetics, comfort, safety, and sustainability. As dealing with a diversity of products during manufacture, installation, use and maintenance, floorings may interfere with the indoor environmental quality, while taking into consideration their large surface areas and the high amount of traffic they receive. Selecting flooring materials based on their environmental impact is trending to become nowadays a common practice, although not an easy one, since complex factors and interactions are involved and must be taken into account. The Paper is focused on challenges that inevitably arise during the inclusive and holistic approach to the design process, when both, architects and engineers take the leading role and have the key responsibility to create a sustainable built environment, by using appropriate resources and techniques, as well as by combining traditional craft with contemporary solutions in innovative ways.
