FLIPPED CLASSROOM APPROACH TO TEACHING ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES
Abstract
The paper is based on a case study of flipped classroom approach to teaching English for specific purposes. The major goals of the pedagogic experiment were to create and implement an online classroom to increase the number of academic hours dedicated to learning English for professional communication at university level. The idea behind the experiment was to foster active learning as well as create accessible learning environment that would challenge students outside the classroom and save on-site time for productive activities. 25 students participated in the pedagogic experiment, combining on-site and off-site classes and undergoing weekly formative assessment. Apart from that, all students were asked to take part in an evaluation survey at the final stage of the experiment. The paper discusses outcomes of the experiment for the instructor and the students and looks into some major challenges of blended learning approach for teaching foreign languages. We offer solutions to some of the issues we have come across conducting the experiment and formulate perspectives for further implementation of online component into the English for specific purposes curriculum.
