Abstract

This abstract focuses upon the main iconographic Street Art works created in Rome to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the death of Pier Paolo Pasolini. A further point of analysis will be the Street Art works in relation to their level complexity and how well-acquainted the street artists who created them were with the works of Pasolini. This study concerns Street Art works in Rome due to the fact that Pasolini spent the majority of his life there. In his novel The Ragazzi and his films Accattone and Mamma Roma Pasolini depicted the poorest and most humble outskirts of post-war Rome. At times Pasolini used professional actors, such as Anna Magnani, however, by choice he used non-professional actors, overall suburbanites or borgatari, so that they could play themselves. During his years in Rome, Pasolini was in close contact with the intellectuals of the period with whom he discussed the dramatic changes which Italy and the Western World were undergoing at that time: the Student Revolution and general social contestation of The Establishment. A number of PasoliniВ’s films were made in rundown areas of Rome, known as borgate. Some of these areas now host the MURO project which regards urban requalification by means of Street Art works. It is in these very same areas that one finds the majority of those Street Art works which make reference to Pasolini.
