THE BECKETTIAN ACTOR
Abstract
There are neither simple nor facile things or answers when we talk or wonder about Samuel Beckett the person, the artist, the professor, the playwright, the director. His manifest theater flashed briefly through the world, revolutionizing and breaking patterns and demolishing conventions. He challenged and irreversibly changed the horizon of expectation for spectators in what the theatrical experience was concerned. His dramatic creation, bridge between world and stage set new delimitations of the space of acceptability and/or possibility in the expectancies of the public passionate about the theater. The Beckettian actors were unique and uniquely gifted. They were all handpicked by Beckett himself for the performances he directed, and were trained under his magical wand to act, react, interpret, live and breathe their roles in the limelight. The stage vibrated magically when author and actors stepped on it and the entire world stopped spinning around to simply watch new worlds and meanings emerging spectacularly. The actors interpreting Beckettian plays were special and their skills singular. In time, their names became synonymous with Beckett and his manifest theater. The present paper discovers, researches and explores the prototype of the Beckettian actor, offering an insight of the way in which they all understood (or not), sensed, transposed and metamorphosed the characters depicted by the Irish dramatist in his plays. Even though Beckett did not bring important innovations in the world of the theater, the Beckettian dramatic work distinguished itself through the new ideas the Irish playwright brought to the theatrical space, interpretation and hinted about what could be said or not, and why not and why so, gently insinuating itself into becoming one of the greatest contemporary avant-garde achievements.
