THE PERCEPTION OF EASTERN EUROPE IN THE THOUGHT AND THE POLITICAL PROJECT OF NICCOLO TOMMASEO

Abstract

The present study aims to analyze the perception of Eastern Europe in the thought and the political project of Niccolò Tommaseo, therefore, it seeks to examine not only the theoretical aspects, but also the geopolitical and geo-cultural significance of Eastern Europe, indispensable engine of the practical actions taken to bring about the desired path of emancipation of the peoples of that whole area. Aware of the value of this project, a source of inspiration for the actions of other patriots including Mazzini, the great Patriot of Dalmatian origin, – convinced of the soundness of the approach of gradual maturation of peoples and staunch supporter of the idea of freedom and independence linked to self-consciousness and to the recognition by the people themselves of their rights –, became the protagonist, especially in the season of ’48, of the ambitious attempt to join the Italian destinies with those of Slavs and, in a broader perspective, of Central and Eastern Europe. Following this point – always subject by Tommaseo to a cautious assessment of the consequences – not only Austria and Turkey were the despotic powers to defeat, but also and especially the Tsarist Russia, accused of wanting to lead a battle on the side of the Balkans and Central and Eastern Europe with the sole purpose of securing a starting ground for the conquest of the entire European continent. In response to this threat, in addition to the ideal value of the brotherhood of peoples, it was highlighted the political and geo-cultural purpose of the Sibenik Patriot: ensure the union of free nations from the Adriatic to the Baltic as the pivot for the security of Western Europe.
