Abstract

Many scientific articles concluded that analogical reasoning can influence creativity in different ways. Some of them claimed that this way of thinking can induce fixation which in turn has a negative influence on the generation of creative ideas. Furthermore, other studies considered analogical reasoning as a key factor of creative thinking. Based on these results we have focused on the relationship between analogical reasoning and creativity. Our main purpose was to investigate figural analogical thinking and creativity in design. The sample contained participants from the faculty of architecture, where design creativity and figural analogical reasoning are basic concepts. Figural tasks were used in order to measure students' analogical reasoning. To operationalize creativity, participants had to develop a project, which was evaluated by experts based on the Creative Products Observation Scale. Results show a reverse relation between analogical reasoning and novelty. Limitations and further implications are discussed.
