THE SOVIET PARK: FROM THE PAST TO THE FUTURE
Abstract
The paper examines historical transformations of the unique phenomenon of Soviet culture the Recreation and Culture Park. Alongside with changing the Soviet ideological project into the specific culture of consumption, the Soviet park was transformed. The authors determine the stages of the Park development and characterize the peculiarities of this culture phenomenon in different periods. Originally, the Park intended to play a new role in the society. It should contribute to the creation of a new human being offering people rehabilitation and good rest, education and culture. Thus, Soviet park was treated as an ideal place of harmony from the point of view of Soviet ideology. It supposed to play a number of functions, which can be divided into three groups: the ideal-forming function expressing the Soviet spiritual values, the cultivating one reflecting the unity of a man and nature (that could change the nature of a man) and the communicative function showing the relationships with people. By 1970s, the previous forms of recreation in the USSR had been replaced with more consumer-oriented activities and that produced tangible effects with regard to the Park. The years of Perestroika turned the Park into market place or simply chaos. At present, the former Soviet parks are seeking for their new identity.
