HOLISTIC URBAN SUSTAINABILITY ANALYSIS AND MEASUREMENT TOOL
Abstract
The need to steer our development towards a more sustainable future is ever more imminent in the light of the latest UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report. Urban areas bear much of the blame and burden and interventions towards urban sustainability may have the greatest impact. Despite increasing interest in urban sustainability, from both the scientific community, as well as practitioners around the world, its clear definition and especially its measurement and monitoring is still a cause of heated debate. A wide variety of studies, diagrams, graphic models or value maps have been proposed, as each researcher and national agency develops its own framework and quantification system based on locally specific characteristics. Building on the authors previously published critical analysis of the most widely used and accepted systems of urban sustainability analysis and measurement, a set of complementary holistic urban sustainability diagrams is proposed. The design objective consisted in the creation of an easy to use tool combining the strengths of the analyzed systems and adding much needed features and state-of-the-art sustainability principles to increase the level of analysis detail and personalization and adaptability, readability, and most importantly the ability to compare both different locations and over time development.
