GENDER ASYMMETRY IN DISTORTED OBJECTS RECOGNITION OF ART AND NON-ART HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Abstract
Object recognition involves processes that activate conscious interpretation of the visual field. Such processes are influenced by previous knowledge and experience. However, previous studies report interesting results, which draw out gender asymmetry in visual perception tasks performance, claimed to occur as a reason of biological differences, other findings attribute this difference to socio-cultural factors, as a result of semantic interpretation due to difference of environment. To test this assumption, the aim of the recent study is to investigate such differences between art and non-art high school students. To measure object recognition correctness, we designed a computer program which displays distorted sets of 12 everyday objects in 20 different levels of distortion. We found significant differences between girls and boys at correct object recognition: male students outperformed females. We also investigated if such asymmetry is a result of the level of distortion, however, our results show no statistically significant differences between the two groups, meaning that the average distortion level was almost identical.
