CASE STUDY AS A METHOD OF DEVELOPING COMMUNICATIVE EFFECTIVENESS IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNING

Abstract

With the case study technique being generally quite profoundly worked out, some peculiar aspects still need further development, in particular, those connected with communicative effectiveness of business rhetoric. This research is aimed at studying the ways to enhance pragmatic impacts of studentsВ’ communicative activities in case study. The analytical methods used in the present paper include elements of the descriptive, comparative and functional analyses. The author shows that case study increases teachersВ’ and studentsВ’ creativity in a very relevant respect, viz. building up the integrated ability of professionally related decision making supported with rhetorical competence. Case discussions provide students with an opportunity to apply the theory, methods and vocabulary they learn in the course of business English and specialized subjects, for polishing specific speech pragmatics, that of persuasion, ice-breaking in contact, elucidation or disguise of information, refocusing attention, etc. The exemplary cases referred to herein disclose the role of effective listening and response skills, public speaking skills, valid argumentation in forming the proper speech pragmatics. Special attention is paid to developing studentsВ’ cross-cultural competence. In conclusion, the article states that such kinds of interactive training eventually result in future specialistsВ’ ability to work independently, think logically and analyze the facts, work in team, make reasoned decisions.
