THE EXPRESSIVENESS OF ROMANIAN TRADITIONAL MUSIC IN THE CONTEXT OF MULTIVOCALITY
Abstract
The Romanian musical folklore represented and is an inexhaustible source of suggestions for Romanian cult music. The characteristic is monodical singing, but simultaneous singing of several voices is indicated from ancient times. They are either specific to traditional instruments, or they are practices of singing, accompanying, or heterophonic music. Concerning harmony, it has some peculiarities, specific to this geographical area. In this study we will try to identify these practices of polyphonic or harmonic songs specific to traditional music and to highlight the different ways in which some composers used them in their cultivated creations. We will narrow the area of interest to a few Romanian composers from the beginning of the 20th century, when most musicians were concerned about finding original languages, and the recipe for success was for many to take some suggestions offered by traditional Romanian music. Among the morphological elements used by them, we will especially refer to those that address the aspect of multiple voices.
