Abstract

Background It is still a challenge for physicians and researchers to identify the patients at risk, to make an early diagnosis and to do a correct monitoring for the progress of periodontitis. According to the research literature, Immunoglobulin A (IgA) is the first line of oral mucosal defense against bacterial invasion, including periodontitis. Also, 8-Hidroxy-2-Deoxy Guanosine (8-OHdG) is a result of DNA modification suffered by the attack of free radicals resulted from the oxidative stress processes in periodontits. Our study proposes to investigate the correlation between IgA and 8-OHdG salivary level and periodontal status. Methods The study included 65 adults which were clinical examined by using: periodontal pockets depth (PPD), bleeding on probing (BP) and gingival index (GI). After clinical exam, subjects were divided in 2 groups: 20 (31%) healthy controls and 45 (69%) with chronic periodontitis. Concentration of both biomarkers was determined from unstimulated whole saliva collected by passive drool technique, by using salivary secretory IgA kit and salivary 8-OHdG kit, by ELISA method. Statistical analysis was made using t-test and Pearson correlation coefficient (p 0.05). Conclusions Our study demonstrates that the salivary IgA and 8-OHdG are correlated with the severity of periodontits, so we can say that the salivary levels of these two biomarkers can be used in the periodontitis diagnosis. Proper monitoring of periodontitis by using these two biomarkers allows prevention of disease evolution and its worsening.
