THE MODEL OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF TEACHERS IN SCHOOL

Abstract

Teacher professionalization is an important challenge for education policies and systems in the European and national contexts. There is an Act of teachersВ’ development in Slovakia since 2009. One of the consequences of the Act is that teachers refer only formal educational activities. However, history shows that we also have (as teachers say) effective forms of non-formal educational activities, e.g. teachers days - teachers of the same subject from different schools or teachers of different subjects from one school present their good practices to each other and develop each otherВ’s professional competences. Our research team attempted to create a model of professional development which would respect good practices from the past as well as the Act from 2009. The paper presents a few models of professional development of teachers in school as an alternative way of professional development. The new Model of professional development of teachers in school supports the professional development of teachers as individuals, teams and school as a whole and it offers optimal strategies for the development. Supporting tools include diagnostics, planning, implementation and improvement reflection. The paper has a character of theoretical study and it is important for the creation and future evaluation of the Model.
