SALONA PRESENTED IN FOUR TRAVELOGUES (G. B. GIUSTINIAN, J. SPON – G. WHELER, R. ADAM, A. FORTIS)
Abstract
The architectural and art historical heritage of Salona, the capital city of the Roman province of Dalmatia, is enormous in scope. A considerable amount of data on the research sites in the city and serendipitous discoveries of its art objects, has however been lost. This study engages with the dispersed data in the literature and archives by an interdisciplinary approach that results in a synthesized work which includes previously unpublished documents and lost objects. The sources in this study are historical-literary writings. Travelogues directly reflect the times in which they were created. Their authors usually describe everyday life, customs, natural and cultural sights. The latter data are seen as a valuable source to literary, historiographic, anthropological, ethnological, cultural and other studies. This paper analyses their role within art historical discourse and from the perspective of the study of ancient Salonitan monuments through the examples of different historical periods. In this paper the author brings some fragments of different sources with descriptions of Salona or its monuments.
