CULTURAL CONSUMPTION IN LATVIA: CASE OF RIGA SUBURB

Abstract

Cultural consumption as sociological phenomena is point of the scientific interest from latest 40ies of last century. Today, there are many authors who are studying questions of cultural consumption understanding that the social and economic impact on it is very important for different aspect – from city life to building of the national identity. The article gives a short summary about current studies in the field of cultural consumption in Latvia after 1991 as well as introduces to the survey made at the University college of Economics and Culture. The survey was held with the aim to evaluate the Latvian citizens’ perception of cultural events and to find out the possible positive influence of big international cultural event (exhibition Titanic) on the well feeling of the inhabitants of the one of Riga`s suburb with a criminal reputation, the event took place. 494 respondents from Riga participated in the survey. The authors used their own developed research instrument containing 30 questions. The results showed an interesting contradiction between the theoretical approach of the inhabitants of this suburb and their practical expectations regarding the development of their own suburb and the raise of their well feeling.
