ECONOMIC PRIORITIES IN PARLIAMENTARY ELECTION IN THE SLOVAK REPUBLIC IN 2016 AND ITS RESULTS

Abstract

Economic and social issues were together with migration crisis in Europe top issues of parliamentary election campaign in the Slovak Republic in 2015/2016. Relevant political parties performed their proposals for future social and economic orientation of the country. Ruling social democrats (DIRECTION-SD) called for fixing their social program and present new initiative in that area (in sense of deepening of current social program). On the other hand, small right (opposition) political parties emphasized the necessity of some liberal policy attitudes. However, as economy went well it was also important not to spend too much to be prepared for not so certain future in Europe. Parliamentary election in the Slovak Republic were held on March 5th 2016. The voters had the opportunity to choose the new composition of parliament and as the Slovak Republic is parliamentary democracy also (indirectly) new composition of the government. Looking at the political platforms of the relevant political parties in the Slovak republic - main economic trends are going to stay the same in the near (middle term) future. Relevant political parties support free market economy rules. On the other hand, some different views on social aspects of the character of economy and Slovak political parties are visible.
