TERRITORIAL EXPANSION AND FUNCTIONAL ZONING OF BOTOSANI TOWN
Abstract
The intensity and frequency of the daily activities of the population is a direct consequence of the townВ’s physical size growth. Urban dynamics depend both on the physico-geographical characteristics of space and on human behavior as the "pressure factor". The town of Botosani it was mentioned for the first time, by the chronicler Grigore Ureche, in 1439, as the largest fair in Moldavia. Situated at the intersection of important commercial roads of the time, the affirmation of urban life has been linked to trade and crafts. From the very beginning, the city went through numerous changes. From 1820 until the first half of the twentieth century, the urban settlement doubles its population and enters to an intense systematization process. From the perspective of its adaptation to the requirements of the society, the analysis of the town, leads to the identification within the city of several micro-spaces dedicated to specific human activities, generating various urban functions. With an alert expansion, the town's current perimeter, groups homogeneously, the functional areas and embraces former rural areas. In this context, territorial planning guarantees the city's efficiency in responding to the demands of the population. But, most of the time, the magnitude of the transformations has led to a sense of lack of control and disorganization. Therefore, the main directions for orderly and balanced planning should be considering: decongestion of the central area, reconversion of former industrial sites, optimal integration of heritage buildings and improvement of urban infrastructure in peripheral area. The interference on urban space would also require the reorganization of functional areas, in order to increase economic and social efficiency.
