COMMUNICATION POSSIBILITIES FOR PEOPLE WITH COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT
Abstract
The paper describes an empirical research aimed at setting up a model of such a communication scheme that will be potentially applicable in assessing the ability of people with cognitive impairment to communicate. In a wider sense, cognitive disorders can include, for example, disorders of the intellect or mild and severe neurocognitive disorders. Severe neurocognitive disorders are most common in seniors who experience memory problems, pathological changes in behavior, difficulties in understanding the language, and speech use, difficulty in performing daily activities, etc. These symptoms can be caused by a neurodegenerative condition such as Alzheimer's disease. The authors were mindful of this target group during the planning and implementation of the initial phase of the research, but their first objective was to try to differentiate those communication categories that would be applicable to selected target groups of clients with cognitive impairment - in terms of diagnostic and communication facilitation.
