Abstract

Every architectural interference involves an unavoidable change in space the object is created in. That changed site would never be the same as it was before, neither in the material nor symbolic dimension. To build is to discover the location. This discovery of the 'new' site is tantamount to learning about the 'found' place, called context - its cognitive, aesthetic, cultural values as well as spatial, typological and morphological properties. Therefore it is always a kind of continuation. Creators recognize the properties of locations differently, defining their values, and transforming them by the means of forms. The article presents architectural examples of this discovery and ways in which buildings for culture define their character in relation to location. This process is based on two activities: the use of existing values and features of the site and their reinterpretation. Locations hide the complexity of meanings and values that make them unique and exceptional. In the chaos of the modern city, full of complicated nodes and dynamic relationships, one is trying to find these lasting values. These searches stop at sites which identity could express strong ideas. It is about social values such as community, attachment, co-participation, or cultural values, both cognitive and aesthetic. This discovery refers to the senses, the imagination and the memory of the recipient. The location builds a sense of attachment and imparting. The building-location as a new element introduces a new order, a moment of balance in the chaos of reality.
