Abstract

The article justifies expediency of creation basic universities in the industrially developed regions of Russia with a significant scientific, educational and innovative po-tential and well-established links with industrial enterprises of the region. The strategic mission of the basic universities is to promote the development of the real economy through the organization of an effective transfer of knowledge and technologies, as well as the training competitive specialists that ensure the implementation of modern ap-proaches to engineering solutions in the framework of regional, national or international networking and cooperation. Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University n.a. R.E. Alekseev is considered as a basic university of federal importance in the Nizhny Novgo-rod region. The article identifies priority activities of the basic university in moderniza-tion of educational, scientific, innovative fields, the development of human resources, the modernization of the university management system and material and technical base, as well as in the development of local communities, urban and regional environ-ments. This article reveals the systemic impacts appearing during the formation of the basic universities. It is shown that the basic university becomes an important institution for sustainable development of the regions.
