DESIGNING GREEN ROOFS IN KOSICE (SLOVAKIA) AS HABITATS
Abstract
The earth will not continue to offer its harvest, except with faithful stewardship. We cannot say we love the land and then take steps to destroy it for use by future generations.” (John Paul II). Kosice, city in eastern Slovakia doesn´t require the installation of green roofs on new commercial, institutional, and multifamily residential developments across the city. There is no bylaw requiring covering existing buildings roof tops with vegetation. This article focuses on leadership on green roofs. This article is about integrating biodiversity into city design. Creating appropriate ecozones, natural habitats, improving quality of life in the city, protecting and loving nature. Not destroying it for use by future generations. The article is pointing at green roofs features, especially reducing stormwater, water retention, improving city climate and temperature differences. Aim of this article is to show green roofs have positive impact on surrounding environment. The goal of this article is pointing out the importance of protecting, restoring and enhancing the health and integrity of the natural ecosystem and supporting biodiversity. An example of city in Slovakia illustrates changes that could ensue from few years of progress if city had bylaw requiring covering roof tops with vegetation. We need to face the fact of saving and not destroying the earth by simple requirements like making tops of the buildings green.
