THE PIONEER EDUCATIONAL WORK OF VERA SCHMIDT AND SABINA SPIELREIN IN THE CONTEXT OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF PSYCHOANALYSIS IN RUSSIA (1921-1923)

Abstract

During the years 1921-1925 in Moscow, as a consequence of the deep political and social changes brought by the October revolution, an original experiment took place thanks to Vera Schmidt, a pedagogist trained in psychoanalysis who intended to search for new educational ways for small children, based on recent findings and knowledge of S. Freud’s psychoanalytical theory . The purpose of this contribution is to provide a brief report about the development of psychoanalysis in Russia and about the foundation of the psychoanalytic experimental kindergarten of Moscow, to recall the figures of the two scientific personalities, Vera Schmidt and Sabina Spielrein who gave life to the enterprise and whose scientific contribution has been shadowed by the work of their more famous colleagues S. Freud and C.G. Jung; finally the educational principles based on psychoanalysis that V. Schmidt and S. Spielrein tried to apply in the Moscow experimental kindergarten will be described.
