THE OPTIONAL DISCIPLINES OF THE ELEMENTARY CLASSES IN COVASNA AND HARGHITA COUNTIES

Abstract

In the 21st century Romanian school teachers are more and more faced with the fact that pedagogical tools having stood the test of time now seem to fail in the context of continuous change of laws and standards in the educational field. Writing the program for the optional discipline means a challenge for them each year; they need competences in many areas of knowledge to fulfill the regulations of the new Law of Education (nr. 1/2011). The article presents the situation of the optional disciplines in urban area at elementary level in two Romanian counties (Harghita and Covasna). The research was carried out in 37 schools, 330 classes, offering the picture of the optional discipline for 7,003 pupils overall. The research findings underline the high diversity of the optional disciplines: about two-third of them are used only in three or even less class. This means also that none of the disciplines have the absolute majority (over 50%). There is however a certain discipline with a high frequency, covering an area of the education which is almost absent among the obligatory disciplines, namely the Health Education.
