STYLICTIC AND LEXICAL MEANS OF EXPRESSIVENESS IN BRITISH MEDIA TEXTS
Abstract
Mass media is the most expanded means of communication nowadays. For decades mass media has been actively working out the strategies to influence the recipients mind. In this research the author makes efforts to make a survey of what appears to be the most efficient, acute and widely practiced expressive stylistic means applicable in the media. The key word here is expressiveness since it reflects the speaker's attitude to the events and forms the pragmatic value of the text. As modern psycholinguists believe, effective communication in the modern world is the one influencing the ideas and making people act in a certain way. Neuro Linguistic Programming as means of predetermining people's behavior is very actual in this aspect as well. The subject of the research is a great variety of stylistic and language means which serve expressiveness such as metaphors, allusions, jargon, colloquialisms, figurative language, archaisms, neologisms as well as some others. The methods applied are stylistic analysis, lexical, semantic, morphological and syntactical analysis. The findings of this survey imply that the expressive means in mass media vary dependent on the recipient. The recipients of quality papers and the recipients of mass papers react differently to various stylistic and language means. Recipient acts as a major factor for identifying the pragmatic components of the text.
