Abstract

The purpose of the article is to analyze the normativity of syntactic constructions with preposition “p?” - one of the most frequently used prepositions in modern Russian business language. To achieve the purpose it is essential to accomplish the following objectives: firstly, to determine the directions and reasons of semantic extension of this preposition; secondly, to systematize the criteria of normativity developed for these constructions in Russian linguistics; thirdly, to estimate various types of constructions with “??” according to these criteria. The research has been conducted on the materials of the National Corpus of the Russian Language, using descriptive linguistic methods (context and transformational analysis of language units) and the regulatory and stylistic method. It is stated that the basic semantic function of such constructions in Russian business language is to indicate relations and the extension of their sphere of application is connected with ellipticity that corresponds to the principle of linguistic economy, as well as with their tellingly official nature. The following criteria of normativity have been specified for constructions with “p?”: functioning within the semantic field of purposeful activity; absence of vernacular or slangy connotation; easiness of interpretation; absence of pleonasticity; idiomatic nature of the expressed semantics. A “normativity scale” of constructions with “p?” has been suggested: both grammatically and stylistically wrong variants; variants belonging to the area of administrative slang, grammatically abnormal but stylistically feasible; grammatically correct variants belonging to the official style of the literary Russian language including official clichés; stylistically neutral variants conveying “subject” semantics. The research systematizes the existing data on application of constructions with preposition “p?” in Russian and suggests the basis for estimating normativity of every individual utterance. The results of the research can be used in compiling dictionaries and reference books on Russian grammar as well as in lectures on Russian.
