IS PARENTOCRACY FUNCTIONAL IN CAREER CHOICE FOR ROMANIAN YOUTHS?
Abstract
The purpose of this article was to identify which are the most important values of youths, which is their hierarchy and how they contribute to fixing aspirations and, hence, to the crystallization of professional options, in order to an efficient insertion on the labour market. The article's purpose was to verify the applicability of certain theories, such as, for example, that of P. Bourdieu and JC Passeron on the factors that are influencing young people's aspirations and professional guidelines or the theory of P. Brown on parentocracy. In order to verify the applicability of these theories, we have presented the main results of a quantitative research, based on an administered questionnaire. The questionnaire was focused on getting an image of the choices, aspirations and professional values of an exploratory lot, of 105 pupils from Craiova (Romania).There have been taken into account the knowledge of the factors (ideals, aspirations and values) that influenced the educational direction, during high school and college, and the underlying of future career choices. We have chosen to present only the results of two questions that are relevant to the theme and are testing the second hypothesis of our study: family and school have an important role in decision making for the educational/professional future of graduates.
