Abstract

In this paper the attention is focalized on the iconology created by Giorgio Manganelli in his essayistic writings, when they are structured as a combination of a tale and its correspective visual material, in his interest for pictorial imagery since the prehistoricity to contemporaneity, approached not only as a complement, but as a nucleus from which sprang his literary discourse. It is emphasized how visual images convey social aspects of author's thought as a prolific writer in Italian culture and in a global context, whose poetics permeated with an experimentalist vein in the neo-avant-guard spirit, as well as philosophicality, is characterized by the use of narrative or non-fiction modules. Analytical explanations of crucial aspects are given about Manganelli's drawing with words in tones that remain culturally impactful, highlighting the modalities of transcending aesthetic notionality to articulate a figurative syntax. From a compositional-expressive standpoint, the present paper focuses on the juxtaposition of realistic, figurative elements to imaginative, invented details within an authorial style which is occasionally manneristic, creating the situations from which paradoxical and allegorical aspects are deduced. Likewise, the prominence is attributed to the role of photography, as well as the episodes when Manganelli's reasoning assumes the connotations of commenting on architectural aspects or deciphering the geometry of the environments. Concomitantly, in his essayism in which he reflects on the paradigmaticity of the literary trajectories of authors in comparative light, especially of anglophone literature (James, Poe, Yeats, Eliot), of which he was also a translator, a figurative perspective is analyzed.

In addition to intertextual links that are established on the vertical axis, within Manganelli’s authorial corpus, these volumes can therefore also be studied by taking into account horizontal intertextuality based on typological parallels. Manganelli’s interest in anglophone literature here comes into play. In the light of thetopic of this paper, literary expression in the English language caught Manganelli's attention also in the volume De America [On America, 1999]

  4. . He was also a translator of works by Edgar Allan Poe, Thomas Stearns Eliot, William Butler Yeats

  5. , Henry James etc. CONCLUSION Manganelli's explorations from the volume Salons, alongside his other writings on the visual arts, are articulated critically and theoretically in the present paper in a way tothematize key concepts, as well as to determine structural qualities influencing the style of writing, and to analyze simultaneously expressional iconographic meaning. Manganelli presents an elaboration of the pictorial material in the register of literature, as if he focused on the literary resonance of his figurative impressions. Analyzed artistic phenomena are captured by Manganelli within a frame corresponding to the history of art, as for compositional reasons. Furthermore, he reflects on what moves the figurative artists in their creations. As for visual artists he writes about, Manganelli comments on the character of their paintings, sometimes including even the constant features and theirvariations from picture to picture. The subjects depicted are treated continuously through Manganelli's texts in a way that iconological patterns and their literaryreflections are whirled kaleidoscopically. In doing so, he is guided by the idea that figurative invention adds something indispensable to aspects of the world. For that reason a personal vision is created, which at the same time doesn’t disregard literary, artistic and sociological references, between which symbolic links are sometimes sought. The author's overall interpretation is dense and encyclopedic, due to itspotentially open structure. In this sense, on some occasions the author develops a ] literary reflection, starting from the ideas narrated, having the value of a story. 5098th SWS International Scientific Conference on Social Sciences ISCSS 2021
