Abstract

The increasingly noticeable Polish population ageing is attracting more and more interest in the problems of ageing. Successful ageing means reaching an old age with insignificant risk of disabilities and illnesses, with high intellectual and physical fitness and maintaining high level of activity. Meeting the needs is the most basic human act that is regarded as extending the humanity. On the one hand, it is expressed by solidarity and commitment to support other members of society and overcoming difficult situations and, on the other hand, by love for close relatives that need assistance. For seniors, family is the most important point of reference and a guarantee of the sense of security, care, acceptance and support. Family is emphasized as the only institution that is able to fill the extended deficits of the old age and effectively solve the problems experience by older adults (emotional, organizational, financial and those related to everyday functioning). Family is also the place where most important psychical needs are met while the traditional communication between generations guarantees a constant transfer of physical, emotional and financial support. Apart from family, the needs of older adults are also met by local governments. Local communities are effective in accurate diagnosis of the needs of older adults and building a system where many entities, through activation, will include older adults in the community. The aim of this study is to highlight the importance of families in meeting the needs of older adults and the role played by local governments in supporting these people.
