Abstract

The article studies linguistic representation of the theme of love in the works of Carol Ann Duffy, whose poems can be considered a bright example of national literary language. About 30 poetic works were analyzed; several subtopics were distinguished in the field. The theme of love is manifested in poems with the help of numerous images and associations such as hope, dream and recovery. On the one hand, love is accompanied with the images of nature and carefree childhood. On the other hand, love is connected with the topic of death, jealousy, despair and solitude. Poetic language of Carol Ann Duffy vividly describes various forms of love and affection. From her point of view, love means deep feeling of liking, affection, devotion or attraction, profound feeling of love for friends and relatives. In C.A. DuffyВ’s worldview love is inseparably connected with the theme of death which can be traced in three dimensions: love is more powerful than death; love transforms into seeking death for an ex-sweetheart; love outlives the death. Sometimes love is interwoven with the topic of nature, where the latter helps to reveal feelings of a persona. Thus, the study proves that the topic of love is a leading one for Carol Ann Duffy, and various artistic and linguistic means are employed to voice it.
