THE INTERRELATIONS BETWEEN THE FUNCTIONAL AREAS IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF THEATRES
Abstract
The author of this paper made an attempt to determine the optimal shapes and sizes of the functional areas in different types of theatre buildings. There is no ideal shape and size of a theatre. But there are some indicators that can help to define the best possible relation between the facilities in theatres. Buildings for the performing arts are intended for drama, opera, classical or modern music, ballet, dance or other performances where a performing artist communicates with the audience. Each type of a production has its specific characteristics, scale and form. The scale of a building depends on the size of the staging required by the type of performance and the number of spectators to seat. The form of a building depends on the type of the stage and the auditorium. The primary objective of this paper is to research the interrelation between the basic functional areas in buildings for the performing arts. Optimal proportions between the stage area, the auditorium and the public spaces were determined based on conducted analysis of different theatre facilities and their sizes. The comparison of diverse formats and volumes of the stage and the auditorium can be used to assess the best possible design solutions for such buildings.
