Abstract

The paper is devoted to the issues of placing the stress in multi-syllabic Russian and English words; this problem arises in the process of teaching English to bachelors studying in multinational groups (CIS, Afghanistan, Colombia, Cyprus, Iran, Mongolia, Nigeria, Peru, Syria, Somalia, Vietnam, Zambia) at the Institute of Law, PeoplesВ’ Friendship University of Russia (RUDN University). The purpose of this study is to reveal some factors of placing the stress in multi-syllabic Russian and English words correctly since accuracy of pronunciation is important for interlocutorsВ’ mutual understanding in professional communication. To achieve this goal, a descriptive analysis is proposed as a means of presenting key concepts. Comparative analysis of some words and word forms occurring in the translation of texts by bachelors studying in multinational environment of RUDN University is given here. The methodological bases of the paper are the conceptual provisions of Russian and foreign researchers in linguistics. The results of this work may help to eliminate the difficulty of placing stress in multi-syllabic words in the Russian and English languages when interpreting texts by bachelors as for most nonimmigrant students both English and Russian are not L1 (the first language) but the foreign languages. Since the processes of migration and globalization require the ability to adequately pronounce words and terminology in the English-Russian-language communication and to interpret professionally, after appropriate disciplineВ’s completion bachelors have to be prepared to successfully interact with intercultural counterparts. The materials of this paper can be useful for faculty members teaching translation and interpretation to non-linguistic UniversitiesВ’ students studying in multicultural environment.
