RESIDENTIAL MOBILITY AS A FORM OF URBAN POPULATION RESILIENCE – CASE STUDY: SUCEAVA TOWN

Abstract

The transformations occurred in the Romanian town after 1990 meant also changes at the level of urban habitation. Financial difficulties, access to property, the emergence of the real estate market and its fluctuations, the modifications that happened in the location of the urban services, the crisis of houses etc, have determined, immediately after 1990 the intensification of the residential mobility and have created the premises for the apparition of the residential segregation. Later, the credit policy in the banking system, the diffusion of the occidental housing models and the generalization of the personal car as means of transport, have determined residential movements towards the peri-urban communes, movements extremely intense in big cities. These displacements, towards the peri-urban or among the neighbourhoods of a town, can be considered an answer of the urban population to some major structural transformations of the urban area. This form of resilience has contributed, together with the functional and morphological transformations, and, depending on the extent to which it manifested, to the maintenance, at a higher or lesser extent, of the viability of the Romanian urban settlements in the last 25 years.
