TOURISM IN RURAL AREAS IN POLAND IN THE YEARS 1999-2016

Abstract

Tourism in rural areas in Poland in the years 1999-2016 was an important element of socio-economic and cultural life. The aim of the study is to present tourism in rural are-as in Poland in the years 1999-2016. The following research methods were used: analy-sis of historical sources, synthesis, induction, deduction, and a comparative method. There was significant development of tourism in rural communities in Poland in the period from 1999-2016. Rural tourism was a major element in the life of country dwell-ers. Agritourism was an essential element in the development of rural tourism. The number of agritourism farms increased in the discussed period. For example, in 2002, there were approximately 6,000 agritourism farms in Poland, and by 2014 the number had increased to more than 8,000. Most agritourism farms operated in the provinces of Lesser Poland, Lower Carpathians and Warmia-Masuria. Agritouristic activity was one of the sources of income, in addition to e.g. crop production or livestock production. The National Association of Rural Sports Teams was one of the major organisations operating in the field of tourism in rural areas. The Association of Rural Sports Teams organized tourism and recreation events at international, national, regional and local levels. They mainly consisted of qualified tourism with some forms of sightseeing, pat-riotic and educational tourism.
