Abstract

This paper interprets the contents of family education, investigated through a historic analysis, written in discussions of annual reports of folk schools. Many authors refer to the period from the middle of the 19th century until 1918 as the “golden age” for their generation. The reports of folk schools dating from that period were analyzed, and in 40 of them, texts were found relating to the field of family education. This paper analyzes the contents of family education with which authors wish to act on raising the public awareness and pedagogic culture of parents in all fields of education. The lack of knowledge and practical reflections within the field of physical-health and moral education are especially pointed out, while the working, intellectual and aesthetic education are less emphasized. The contents of family education of those times have their bases in a strong moral action and influence of religious contents in observing God’s commandments, i.e. they are in complete correlation with the official pedagogic attitudes. The contents which are recommended for application in family education have to find their objectives within Christian moral values. By observing the analyzed period of time, we can conclude that many basic notions have not changed significantly until the present, but the patterns in their approach and evaluation have changed, as well as expressing judgements of values on the personal scale of individual families.
